Colle aid direct - Happy Decision Day 2019
Big Decision due for millions of future college students today.
Congratulations to the millions of high school seniors and their families that must make that all-important decision today. Which College or University to attend. All of your studying, research, school visits and anxiety come down to this moment.
For many Universities today is the deadline to decide which school will become your alma mater.
After you make that crucial decision, take a breath. Here are some tips to help.
- Apply for Scholarships. There are many tools out there to help. Look around your local area and businesses, local banks, credit unions, social clubs and school clubs. There is free money, but you will need to search for it and apply. No free lunch here but free money is good. Beware some sites charge fees to search for scholarships. Here is our free scholarship search tool:https://www.collegeaiddirect.com/resources
- Complete the FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid), if you haven't completed it already. This is your key to Billions of Dollars in Federal Student Aid including Grants, scholarships and federal loans. The sooner you can fill out the FAFSA, the better. Many states have deadlines. Some Grants are first come, first served. Did you know that you can now fill out the FAFSA in October? Beware some companies charge to fill out the form. Do NOT use them. The word FREE is in the title. Fill it out for FREE with the Federal Government here: https://www.collegeaiddirect.com/resources
- Research the area around your school selection. Once classes start, you may not have much free time to adventure.
- Where do you want to live? On Campus, Dorms, Apartment, Roommates?
- Do you need a gym?
- What do you like to eat? Find restaurants, grocery stores and the all-important coffee shop.
- Local transportation. Car, bus, rideshare, bike?
- Socialize. You can join social media groups for the school, sporting teams and local groups for your interests before you get to campus. It is a fantastic way to see how current students spend their free time and to connect with students like you.
- Create a plan on how to pay for school. Scholarships, grants, federal loans and private loans.
- Create a spreadsheet or document to track the total Cost Of Attendance and how it is being paid off. This will save you hours of grief after graduation. It is also a good idea to track the loans so you can estimate your payments after you graduate.
- Research Private Student Loans . Beware of fees and short durations of payback, some of the advertised lowest rates only allow 5 years for payback. Look for longer terms, 10-15 years. You can always pay off early, just verify there are no prepayment penalties. Be ready with a cosigner. The stronger the credit of your cosigner, the lower your rate. This can save you thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. Some lenders offer a minimum payment option while in school, usually $25. While it may be tempting to not make any payments, this option helps you pay less over the life of the loan and builds your credit history .
